What is MLA?

MLA stands for Modern Language Association, and MLA style is a set of standards for research writing and documentation. There are other styles like AP (Associated Press) and Chicago style, but in middle and high school you will generally use MLA.

Why do I need to cite my sources?

  • Helps you avoid plagiarizing someone's work
  • Gives credit to the original author for their ideas
  • Strengthens your arguments by showing you referred to experts in the field
  • Tells readers where they can find the original source and learn more about the topic

What information is included in a citation?

  • Author - Creator of the work
  • Publication Date - Year it was published
  • Title of the Work
  • Source Information - Details like the name of the database you found an article, page numbers, and URLs for online sources
